Description
Theredracaenabelongs to the Liliaceae family. This shrub includes dozens of different species, all with similar characteristics and with the same cultivation needs. The plant, also called by the botanical name "dracaena", is native to the hot-humid areas of Africa and Asia. Some varieties are native to the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago northeast of the African coast.
It is one of the most common houseplants, even if not everyone knows its name;dracaenacomes from the Greek drakaina, or female dragon: it derives from the fact that from one of the species, dracaenadraco, a resin used as a dye has been extracted for thousands of years to obtain the shade of dragon's blood.
Dracaenas, in addition to the bizarre name, also have beautiful foliage, decorative throughout the year, so beautiful that they have spread throughout most of the globe.
There are many species of dracaena, most originating from tropical Africa, but also present in Asia; all plants in nature are large shrubs or small trees, with a smooth and erect stem, scarcely branched, and have the foliage gathered in large tufts, produced only at the apex of the branches.
In the nursery there are only a few species, D. massangeana, D. marginata, D. sanderiana and a few others, which have more or less identical cultivation requirements.
The flowers are hardly produced by plants grown in pots, even if it sometimes happens, in spring, spreading a very intense and pleasant scent in the air of the apartment
