    Description

    Coffee plant

Coffee is a beloved drink all over the world. It comes from a very tall African plant, of which there are several varieties. However, few people know that the coffee plant can also be grown indoors for ornamental purposes. In fact, it has wonderful glossy leaves of a beautiful bright green.
So let's get to know her closely. Let's see what are its characteristics and advice to cure it and make it grow better in our homes.

    Coffee plant in Italy

Cultivation in our country has exclusively ornamental purposes. The Coffea Arabica variety is recommended as it is the one that best adapts to our climate and domestic environment. Rather than sowing (a somewhat complicated procedure), the purchase of a seedling is recommended.

In the apartment it is grown in pots. It is a shrub that does not exceed 2 meters. It produces a slender stem, with a large rounded crown. The dark green leaves are glossy, oval or lanceolate. The specimens grown in the apartment are evergreen but usually produce neither flowers nor fruit.

    Ornamental coffee tree

In areas other than those of origin, the coffee plant is mainly grown for decorative purposes. Its foliage has a marked ornamental power.
Growing it as a houseplant is pretty straightforward. Like all tropical plants, it needs averagely high temperatures, associated with a high humidity rate and good lighting.

In nature it can reach 8 meters. In plantations, on the other hand, it does not exceed 3 meters because, otherwise, the harvesting operations would be rather complicated.
In our latitudes, the coffee plant is grown only for decorative-ornamental purposes, and can reach a maximum height of 2 metres.

Blooms in late spring. Star-shaped, its flowers are white, and thus create a nice chromatic contrast with the large glossy leaves. It is difficult for plants grown in Italy for purely ornamental purposes to flower.

As already mentioned, this is not too difficult a plant to grow. Let's look at some specific suggestions.

Irrigation: it needs regular and abundant watering, taking care to avoid water stagnation. In summer it should be watered every day, while in winter a little more sporadic frequencies can be used. Also, as it loves moisture, it should be sprayed regularly

Being a plant of tropical origins, it cannot stand the cold. The minimum temperature at which to expose it must not fall below 14°C. The ideal temperature is between 18 and 21°C.
Furthermore, it is important to guarantee an extremely bright exposure, while avoiding direct sun.

Finally, a good air exchange would help to avoid the danger of parasites. However, be careful to avoid too cold currents.

The Coffea Arabica variety is the most suitable for home cultivation.

From March to October, watering must be regular, usually daily. During the rest of the year, it can decrease.

Given its origins, the coffee plant thrives well in a very humid environment. Therefore, you should regularly steam the foliage. In addition, electric humidifiers could also be useful.
